The Only Moral Abortion Is My Abortion

Right-wing dilemma and scathing hypocrisy (From DKos)

When the Anti-Choice Choose

Abortion is a highly personal decision that many women are sure they'll never have to think about until they're suddenly faced with an unexpected pregnancy. But this can happen to anyone, including women who are strongly anti-choice. So what does an anti-choice woman do when she experiences an unwanted pregnancy herself? Often, she will grin and bear it, so to speak, but frequently, she opts for the solution she would deny to other women - abortion.

In the spring of 2000, I collected the following anecdotes directly from abortion doctors and other clinic staff in North America, Australia, and Europe. The stories are presented in the providers' own words, with minor editing for grammar, clarity, and brevity. Names have been omitted to protect privacy.

"I have done several abortions on women who have regularly picketed my clinics, including a 16 year old schoolgirl who came back to picket the day after her abortion, about three years ago. During her whole stay at the clinic, we felt that she was not quite right, but there were no real warning bells. She insisted that the abortion was her idea and assured us that all was OK. She went through the procedure very smoothly and was discharged with no problems. A quite routine operation. Next morning she was with her mother and several school mates in front of the clinic with the usual anti posters and chants. It appears that she got the abortion she needed and still displayed the appropriate anti views expected of her by her parents, teachers, and peers." (Physician, Australia)

"We too have seen our share of anti-choice women, ones the counselors usually grit their teeth over. Just last week a woman announced loudly enough for all to hear in the recovery room, that she thought abortion should be illegal. Amazingly, this was her second abortion within the last few months, having gotten pregnant again within a month of the first abortion. The nurse handled it by talking about all the carnage that went on before abortion was legalized and how fortunate she was to be receiving safe, professional care. However, this young woman continued to insist it was wrong and should be made illegal. Finally the nurse said, 'Well, I guess we won't be seeing you here again, not that you're not welcome.' Later on, another patient who had overheard this exchange thanked the nurse for her remarks." (Clinic Administrator, Alberta)

"Recently, we had a patient who had given a history of being a 'pro-life' activist, but who had decided to have an abortion. She was pleasant to me and our initial discussion was mutually respectful. Later, she told someone on my staff that she thought abortion is murder, that she is a murderer, and that she is murdering her baby. So before doing her procedure, I asked her if she thought abortion is murder - the answer was yes. I asked her if she thought I am a murderer, and if she thought I would be murdering her baby, and she said yes. But murder is a crime, and murderers are executed. Is this a crime? Well, it should be, she said. At that point, she became angry and hostile, and the summary of the conversation was that she regarded me as an abortion-dispensing machine, and how dare I ask her what she thinks. After explaining to her that I do not perform abortions for people who think I am a murderer or people who are angry at me, I declined to provide her with medical care. I do not know whether she found someone else to do her abortion." (Physician, Colorado)

"In 1973, after Roe v. Wade, abortion became legal but had to be performed in a hospital. That of course was changed later. For the first 'legal abortion day' I had scheduled five procedures. While scrubbing between cases, I was accosted by the Chief of the OB/Gyn service. He asked me, 'How many children are you going to kill today?' My response, out of anger, was a familiar vulgar retort. About three months later, this born-again Christian called me to explain that he was against abortion but his daughter was only a junior in high school and was too young to have a baby and he was also afraid that if she did have a baby she would not want to put it up for adoption. I told him he did not need to explain the situation to me. 'All I need to know', I said, 'is that SHE wants an abortion.' Two years later I performed a second abortion on her during her college break. She thanked me and pleaded, 'Please don't tell my dad, he is still anti-abortion.'" (Physician, Washington State)

Mitt Supports Comparison of Hillary and Obama to Bin Laden

From TMZ:

Not everyone is a fan of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, but comparing them to one of the most dastardly pieces of human excrement of all time -- that might be bit much. Especially for a presidential candidate.
Mitt
TMZ obtained photos of presidential candidate Mitt Romney trying to win over grammatically challenged South Carolinians Thursday by holding a sign that said, "No to Obama, Osama and Chelsea's Moma."

National Review Love Boat: Let's Execute Some Liberals!

The New Republic's Johann Hari recently went on the National Review cruise and then filed this extraordinary report about what he witnessed (the full article is also available here). Hari mingled in with the NR faithful who, unaware that he was a reporter, provided him with material like this:

I lie on the beach with Hillary-Ann, a chatty, scatty 35-year-old Californian designer. As she explains the perils of Republican dating, my mind drifts, watching the gentle tide. When I hear her say, " Of course, we need to execute some of these people," I wake up. Who do we need to execute? She runs her fingers through the sand lazily. "A few of these prominent liberals who are trying to demoralise the country," she says. "Just take a couple of these anti-war people off to the gas chamber for treason to show, if you try to bring down America at a time of war, that's what you'll get." She squints at the sun and smiles. " Then things'll change."
And, at a dinner Hari attended on the first day:
To my left, I find a middle-aged Floridian with a neat beard. To my right are two elderly New Yorkers who look and sound like late-era Dorothy Parkers, minus the alcohol poisoning. They live on Park Avenue, they explain in precise Northern tones. "You must live near the UN building," the Floridian says to one of the New York ladies after the entree is served. Yes, she responds, shaking her head wearily. "They should suicide-bomb that place," he says. They all chuckle gently. How did that happen? How do you go from sweet to suicide-bomb in six seconds?

More Republic Party Values: Death Threats

The comedy routine known as republic party "morals" just gets better and better. The wing-nuts of all wing-nuts, Pat Robertson, threatened to kill a man.

A plaintiff in a federal lawsuit against Pat Robertson says the televangelist threatened his life and that of his family at a legal proceeding Wednesday in the Norfolk federal courthouse.

The accuser, Phillip Busch, is suing Robertson for misappropriation of his image in the promotion of Robertson's protein diet shake.

According to a complaint Busch filed with the Norfolk police, Robertson entered a room in the courthouse Wednesday afternoon to be questioned for a deposition – an out-of-court form of testimony – and told Busch:

"I am going to kill you and your family."

Mitt Is In: Romney Joins 2008 Presidential Race

In his home state of Michigan, where his father was a three-term governor, the former GOP Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney declared his candidacy for president.

I really, really hope Mitt becomes the presidential choice for the republic party. Mitt is a Mormon and the republic party wing-nuts will no doubt stay home in masses rather than vote for a Mormon. The Robertsons, Falwells, and the rest of the freak show known as a the republic party will soundly distance themselves from a Mormon. GO MITT!!!!!!!

Stupid People Say Stupid Things

How can a doctor "determine that a person actually did incur that sexual assault. Are they going to take the word of that individual? You could see individuals coming in that just wanted to make sure that last night's stand didn't result in a pregnancy and basically say that they had been a sexual assault" to get the morning after pill. - Republican (CO) state Sen. David Schultheis.

Maybe because women can go to their local CVS or Target and purchase the medication for far cheaper than they would by getting it through the hospital?

And what, exactly, does this say about Schultheis' opinion women? That they'll put on a show to get medication they could pick up a block from their house? Another example of just how much reich-wingers hate America.

John Edwards: Model Campaigner

It was announced recently that 2008 Presidential candidate John Edwards had hired two bloggers to conduct blogger outreach for his campaign. The bloggers, Melissa McEwan and Amanda Marcotte, both have a history of "take no prisoners" blogging, expressing their opinions and beliefs with what some consider to be harsh rhetoric (I personally find them both honest and refreshing).

Yesterday, Catholic League president Bill Donohue attacked the Edwards campaign and the women for posts they had written on their personal blogs, critisizing Catholicism for some of their practices (including the pedophelia scandal, and the Church's stance on birth control). Donohue claimed the girls were "anti-Catholic" and demanded Edwards fire them both.

Donohue himself is no saint, and has a history of foaming at the mouth:

"He has referred to the 'gay death style,' remarked, 'God forbid we'd run out of little gay kids,' claimed that Senator John Kerry 'never found an abortion he couldn't justify,' and claimed that 'Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular ... Hollywood likes anal sex.'"

Donohue also associates with unseemly characters that have said things McEwan and Marcotte couldn't even dream of. The Board of Directors of the Catholic League include:

Dinesh D'Souza (Who blames liberals for 9/11)
Alan Keyes (Hates his own child for being gay)
Kate O'Beirne (Who doesn't think women should have a life outside the home)

Edwards, at first, seemed to consider firing the bloggers and buckling to the right-wing hate machine, but in the end, handled the matter perfectly by issuing the following statement:

"The tone and the sentiment of some of Amanda Marcotte's and Melissa McEwen's posts personally offended me. It's not how I talk to people, and it's not how I expect the people who work for me to talk to people. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that kind of intolerant language will not be permitted from anyone on my campaign, whether it's intended as satire, humor or anything else."

Both women will be retained and continue working on the campaign, and Edwards has his first win against the right-wing noise machine.

This town is a white Christian town in a Christian nation

During a council meeting, City Councilman Stephen Vengrow (New Providence, New Jersey) spoke out against the city purchasing a Hanukkah banner, declaring: "This town is a white Christian town in a Christian nation. It's about time someone reminded the Jews, Hindus, Mormons, Buddhists, and other guest-Americans that this is our country and they better start getting with the program."

As always, Jesus' General addresses this matter like any "French-hating heterosexual" should.

Ever wonder what insanity looks like: Soy Causes Gayness

http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=53327

A devil food is turning our kids into homosexuals
by Jim Rutz at WorldNetDaily

There's a slow poison (Comment: Typical win-nut scare tactic....nice touch) out there that's severely damaging our children and threatening to tear apart our culture. The ironic part (Comment: It if were true, it would be "irony". You should give dubyah a lesson on what is and isn't "irony") is, it's a "health food," one of our most popular.

Now, I'm a health-food guy (Comment: Chicken wings with light beer is not "health food"), a fanatic who seldom allows anything into his kitchen unless it's organic. I state my bias (Comment: duuuuuuh) here just so you'll know I'm not anti-health food.

The dangerous food I'm speaking of is soy. Soybean products are feminizing, and they're all over the place. You can hardly escape them anymore.

I have nothing against an occasional soy snack. Soy is nutritious and contains lots of good things. Unfortunately, when you eat or drink a lot of soy stuff, you're also getting substantial quantities of estrogens.

Estrogens are female hormones. If you're a woman, you're flooding your system with a substance it can't handle in surplus. If you're a man, you're suppressing your masculinity and stimulating your "female side," physically and mentally.

In fetal development, the default is being female. All humans (even in old age) tend toward femininity (Comment: That explains finding my grandfather wearing my grandmother's dresses!). The main thing that keeps men from diverging into the female pattern is testosterone, and testosterone is suppressed by an excess of estrogen.

If you're a grownup (Comment: It's evident you are not), you're already developed, and you're able to fight off some of the damaging effects of soy. Babies aren't so fortunate. Research is now showing that when you feed your baby soy formula, you're giving him or her the equivalent of five birth control pills a day (Comment: where's the citation for this "research"). A baby's endocrine system just can't cope with that kind of massive assault, so some damage is inevitable. At the extreme, the damage can be fatal.

Soy is feminizing, and commonly leads to a decrease in the size of the penis, sexual confusion and homosexuality (Comment: Again, no scientific citation for this so-called "research"). That's why most of the medical (not socio-spiritual) blame for today's rise in homosexuality must fall upon the rise in soy formula and other soy products. (Most babies are bottle-fed during some part of their infancy, and one-fourth of them are getting soy milk!) Homosexuals often argue that their homosexuality is inborn because "I can't remember a time when I wasn't homosexual." No, homosexuality is always deviant. But now many of them can truthfully say that they can't remember a time when excess estrogen wasn't influencing them.

Doctors used to hope soy would reduce hot flashes, prevent cancer and heart disease, and save millions in the Third World from starvation. That was before they knew much about long-term soy use. Now we know it's a classic example of a cure that's worse than the disease. For example, if your baby gets colic from cow's milk, do you switch him to soy milk? Don't even think about it. His phytoestrogen level will jump to 20 times normal. If he is a she, brace yourself for watching her reach menarche as young as seven, robbing her of years of childhood. If he is a boy, it's far worse: He may not reach puberty till much later than normal.

Research in 2000 showed that a soy-based diet at any age can lead to a weak thyroid, which commonly produces heart problems and excess fat. Could this explain the dramatic increase in obesity today (Comment: Apparently uber high fat diets have nothing to do with obesity)?

Recent research on rats shows testicular atrophy, infertility and uterus hypertrophy (enlargement) (Comment: What "research"? He must be using the "Paris Business Review" as his source of "data"). This helps explain the infertility epidemic and the sudden growth in fertility clinics. But alas, by the time a soy-damaged infant has grown to adulthood and wants to marry, it's too late to get fixed by a fertility clinic.

Worse, there's now scientific evidence that estrogen ingredients in soy products may be boosting the rapidly rising incidence of leukemia in children. In the latest year we have numbers for, new cases in the U.S. jumped 27 percent (comment: I can't stress enough how wrong that is, please refer to pages 12 & 13 of Cancer Facts and Figures. AML has increased by 1.8% per year since 1988 while CLL has decreased by 1.9% per year since 1992.) In one year!

There's also a serious connection between soy and cancer in adults – especially breast cancer (Comment: errrrrrrr, wrong again. A recent review of the literature found:"There is no clear evidence that phytoestrogen intake influences the risk of developing breast cancer". That's why the governments of Israel, the UK, France and New Zealand are already cracking down hard on soy (Comment: Crack, hard...where's Mark Foley?).

In sad contrast, 60 percent of the refined foods in U.S. supermarkets now contain soy (Comment: And 100 percent of your readers that believe you are idiots). Worse, soy use may double in the next few years because (last I heard) the out-of-touch medicrats in the FDA hierarchy are considering allowing manufacturers of cereal, energy bars, fake milk, fake yogurt, etc., to claim that "soy prevents cancer." It doesn't (Comment: G. dubyah Bush prevents cancer....right?).

P.S.: Soy sauce is fine. Unlike soy milk, it's perfectly safe because it's fermented, which changes its molecular structure (Comment: Hey Einstein, ALL phytoestrogens are metabolized in the gut and go through a series of "molecular changes") . Miso, natto and tempeh are also OK, but avoid tofu (Comment: You should avoid sharp objects, small children, and operating heavy machinery).

~~~~~~
Dr. Matt: It's quite comical and scary when really, really uninformed people like Rutz attempt to rationalize human behavior via their junk science. I only touched the surface on how wrong Rutz's little commentary actually is. The plain and simple fact about soy and soy products is: "we don't know". Some studies show phytos to be protective for a variety of cancers, others show no effect, and a few show increased risk. The same conclusions are true for the relief of menopausal symptoms, CHD, cognitive impairment, and osteoporotic fractures. So, please, if you are interested in a topic, do the research yourself. One place to start is PubMed. The last place to take advise is from wing-nut freaks like Rutz.
